Alberta Snow Loads & Winds for Steel Buildings
Design snow loads change a lot across Alberta. The ground snow load is about 1.1 kPa in Calgary and Medicine Hat, 1.7 kPa in Edmonton, 2.2 kPa in Grande Prairie and 3.3 kPa in Banff.
Southern Alberta has a different challenge: strong chinook winds, which affect bracing, doors and wall panels. A package priced for Calgary is not automatically right for Grande Prairie or the mountain parks, so every Tower building is engineered for its exact site.
| Location | Snow load Ss |
|---|---|
| Calgary | 1.1 kPa |
| Medicine Hat | 1.1 kPa |
| Lethbridge | 1.2 kPa |
| Brooks | 1.2 kPa |
| Fort McMurray | 1.5 kPa |
| Edmonton | 1.7 kPa |
| Red Deer | 1.8 kPa |
| Vegreville | 1.9 kPa |
| Camrose | 2.0 kPa |
| Grande Prairie | 2.2 kPa |
| Hinton | 2.6 kPa |
| Banff | 3.3 kPa |
Source: National Building Code of Canada, Appendix C, Table C-2 Climatic Design Data (values as published in the 2015 edition). Alberta now uses the National Building Code – 2023 Alberta Edition, so your engineer confirms the current snow and wind loads for your exact site. Ground snow load is not the same as roof design load.
Steel Building Permits in Alberta
Alberta uses the National Building Code – Alberta Edition. Most projects need two approvals from the municipality: a development permit for land use and a building permit for construction.
Check the land use bylaw
Your municipality’s land use bylaw sets permitted uses, setbacks, height and site coverage. Many projects need a development permit first. Development vs building permit
Find who issues permits
Building permits are issued by your municipality or an accredited safety codes agency on its behalf. Rural sites are often handled by an agency.
Prepare the documents
Tower provides stamped building and foundation drawings designed for your site’s loads. Alberta permit documents
Farm buildings
Farm buildings can be treated differently under Alberta rules. Confirm the requirements with your municipality before you build.

Steel Building Prices for Alberta
For early planning, these are our current ranges for the steel building package. Delivery to Alberta, foundation, erection and site work are extra, and your site’s snow and wind loads can affect the final number.
Larger commercial, industrial and farm buildings.
Size starts to bring the cost per square foot down.
Smaller buildings cost more per square foot.
Your price depends on size, height, snow and wind loads, doors, insulation, finishes, foundation and delivery. Read our Ontario vs Alberta vs BC cost comparison and 40 × 60 building cost guide, or get a project-specific quote.
