Snow & wind

Alberta Snow Loads & Winds for Steel Buildings

Design snow loads change a lot across Alberta. The ground snow load is about 1.1 kPa in Calgary and Medicine Hat, 1.7 kPa in Edmonton, 2.2 kPa in Grande Prairie and 3.3 kPa in Banff.

Southern Alberta has a different challenge: strong chinook winds, which affect bracing, doors and wall panels. A package priced for Calgary is not automatically right for Grande Prairie or the mountain parks, so every Tower building is engineered for its exact site.

Source: National Building Code of Canada, Appendix C, Table C-2 Climatic Design Data (values as published in the 2015 edition). Alberta now uses the National Building Code – 2023 Alberta Edition, so your engineer confirms the current snow and wind loads for your exact site. Ground snow load is not the same as roof design load.

Permits & process

Steel Building Permits in Alberta

Alberta uses the National Building Code – Alberta Edition. Most projects need two approvals from the municipality: a development permit for land use and a building permit for construction.

  1. Check the land use bylaw

Your municipality’s land use bylaw sets permitted uses, setbacks, height and site coverage. Many projects need a development permit first. Development vs building permit

  2. Find who issues permits

Building permits are issued by your municipality or an accredited safety codes agency on its behalf. Rural sites are often handled by an agency.

  3. Prepare the documents

Tower provides stamped building and foundation drawings designed for your site’s loads. Alberta permit documents

  4. Farm buildings

Farm buildings can be treated differently under Alberta rules. Confirm the requirements with your municipality before you build.

For the full process, timelines and fees, see our Alberta steel building permit guide, permit costs and permit timelines.

Caesar and his crew Julio and Michael were outstanding. They are hardworking and quite skillful in their craft. Kayden was also quite a delight to work with too. The employee at Tower Steel Buildings is what makes the company great, the upper management should take note.

I purchased a steel building from Tower Steel and was really glad I did. Every other company had sales reps that hounded me down, constantly came back with different pricing, selling me on buildings I didnt even want. Not with Tower Steel. The Sales Rep was very knowledgeable, they ensured the design was what I wanted, and being a Canadian company, their price in comparison was SIGNIFICANTLY lower than some of the competitors. If you're looking for a steel building that lasts forever, look no further. Guy the owner really looks to take care of his clients. Thanks Tower Steel Buildings!

Kevin responded super fast and actually listened to what I wanted, not just trying to make a sale. No pressure at all. My building looks awesome and my neighbours are jealous!

Wasn’t sure about ordering a metal building online, but Danielle at Tower made it so easy. She answered all my silly questions without making me feel rushed, got me a good deal on a 40x60 for my equipment storage, and even followed up after delivery to make sure everything was okay. Super impressed with the service and quality. Definitely telling my buddies about this company!
