Nova Scotia Snow Loads & Coastal Conditions
Ground snow loads vary from about 1.4 kPa on the south shore at Lockeport and 1.9 kPa in Halifax to 2.6 kPa in the Annapolis Valley and 3.1 kPa in Springhill. Nova Scotia also has one of the highest rain-on-snow loads in Canada, about 0.6 kPa, because heavy rain often falls on existing snow.
Coastal sites add salt spray, humidity and strong storms. Panel coatings, fasteners, trims and door hardware should be chosen for salt exposure. Read about corrosion protection.

Steel Building Permits in Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia applies the National Building Code through the Nova Scotia Building Code Regulations. Building permits are issued by your municipality, and many projects also need a development permit under the local land use bylaw.
Check the land use bylaw
Your municipality sets permitted uses, setbacks and lot coverage. Many projects need a development permit before the building permit. Development vs building permit
Prepare the documents
Tower provides stamped building and foundation drawings designed for your site’s loads. Documents required
Apply to your municipality
Submit the application with your site plan and drawings. How to apply
Avoid common rejections
Unclear building use, weak site plans and missing steel reactions are the usual reasons applications are returned. Common rejections
